Rob Smylie.

20 Years on Site.
Now Teaching What
No One Else Does.

Construction manager, site supervisor, and co-founder of

Smart Renovators Academy - Australia's renovation school built on real on-site experience, not theory. Rob teaches homeowners, investors, and property flippers what to check before they pay

at every stage of every renovation.

I Started Where Most People Never Do.

My first day in construction I was a site labourer. I didn't know what a scope of works was. I didn't know why trade sequence mattered. I didn't know what a building inspector looked for, how a waterproofing membrane should be applied, or what a fair price for a plumbing rough-in looked like.

I learned it the way everyone learns it on a building site - by watching what happened when it went wrong, and understanding why.

Over the next two decades, I worked my way from the tools into site supervision, then into construction management across both residential and commercial projects. I've managed everything from homeowner renovations to projects well above $20M - across multiple states throughout Australia.

That experience doesn't come from doing one renovation and calling yourself an expert. It comes from being accountable - financially and professionally - for what happens on a construction site every single day for twenty years.

After 20 years, here is what I know that most renovation courses - and most renovation courses online - don't teach:

  • What to check before you pay any invoice

  • How to write a Scope of Works that eliminates variations

  • How trade sequence works

  • Where renovation budgets blow out

  • How to stay in control even when you have a project manager

What 20 Years on Site Teaches You That No Renovation Course Does.

There is a category of knowledge that lives on construction sites - passed between builders, site managers, and experienced tradespeople who've seen what goes wrong when the owner doesn't know what to look for.

It doesn't appear in most home renovation courses.

It's rarely covered in property flipping programs.

And it's almost never included in the design-focused renovation content that makes up the majority of what's available online.

That knowledge is specific. Practical.

And it's the difference between a renovation that finishes on budget and one that quietly loses $20,000 to mistakes that were entirely preventable.

The Scale and Scope of What I've Managed.

I've worked across both residential and commercial construction in Australia - from homeowner renovation projects to multi-million dollar commercial builds. That breadth matters, because the same principles apply at every scale: a clear scope, a locked schedule, tight budget management, and a disciplined sign-off process.

The residential renovator doing their first bathroom doesn't need a $20M commercial management system. But they do need to know what the waterproofing inspector looks for. They need to know which line item in a tiling quote is padded. They need to know what "practical completion" actually means before they hand over the final payment.

That knowledge transfers from any scale of project and it's what I bring to every member of Smart Renovators Academy.

Why I Built This - And What It Means for Your Renovation.

Mel and I started Smart Renovators Academy because we kept seeing the same pattern: renovators who had done their homework on the deal, researched the design, hired reputable trades - and still ended up with expensive problems they didn't see coming.

Not because they weren't capable. Because nobody had ever taught them what to look for on site. What to check before they paid. How to write a scope that holds trades accountable. How to stay in control of a project even when someone else was managing the day-to-day.

The property flipping courses available in Australia are excellent at teaching deal-finding and market strategy.

The renovation courses online do a good job on design and finishes. But the on-site construction management knowledge - the knowledge that lives between "we've started" and "you've paid the final invoice" - has largely been inaccessible to homeowners and investors who aren't in the industry.

Smart Renovators Academy exists to close that gap. Whether you're doing your first cosmetic renovation or your fifth property flip, the program gives you the scope, schedule, budget controls, and sign-off systems that professional construction managers use on every project they run.

Mel Smylie

Co-Founder · Marketing & Operations Director · Smart Renovators Academy

Before Smart Renovators Academy, I spent years as one of Australia's top-performing real estate agents - consistently in the top 10% nationally, with over 100 sales per year and a deep understanding of what buyers actually look for, what properties sell for, and what renovation decisions add value versus what simply adds cost.

I grew up in a family of builders and bricklayers. I've completed my own renovation and subdivision projects. And I've watched, from both sides of the transaction, what happens when a renovation owner doesn't have the right knowledge going in - and what's possible when they do.

My role at SRA is to make Rob's on-site expertise accessible. To translate two decades of construction management knowledge into education that any homeowner, investor, or property flipper in Australia can apply to their own renovation - regardless of their experience level.

"I've watched Rob walk onto a site and identify in ten minutes what would have taken most renovation owners months and thousands of dollars to discover. Renovators Pro exists because that knowledge shouldn't be exclusive to people who've spent 20 years in the industry."

Together, Rob and I bring a combination that no other renovation course in Australia currently offers: real estate market expertise, on-site construction management knowledge, and a genuine understanding of what it takes to renovate profitably - from the deal through to the final sign off.

Smart Renovators Academy

Australia's Renovation School Built on Real Construction Experience.

Smart Renovators Academy is an online renovation course platform founded by Rob and Mel Smylie.

SRA offers renovation courses online for homeowners, property investors, and house flippers across Australia - designed to teach the

on-site construction management knowledge that most home renovation courses and property investing programs leave out entirely.

If you're looking for a renovating course that teaches you what to check before you pay any invoice, how to write a Scope of Works that eliminates variations, how to manage a renovation schedule that keeps trades moving in sequence, and how to stay in control of your project even when a project manager is on site - Smart Renovators Academy was built for you.

Unlike design-focused house renovation courses or deal-finding programs, SRA's curriculum is grounded in the systems professional construction managers use on every project they run. The same checklists. The same sign-off processes. The same scope and schedule discipline - now available to every renovation owner in Australia, regardless of experience level.
